Description

The sphinx was depicted in the shape of a lion with the head of pharaoh. It symbolizes the unification of natural and spiritual power. In ancient Egypt, the crouching form of the lion-deity served a defensive role. The lion was believed to be guarding the gates of the horizon, through which the sun entered and left the world each day. 24K gold plate over pewter. Gold-filled earwires.
